New grad RN interview guide
New Grad Nursing Interview Questions and Sample Answers
A new grad interview is a chance to show how you work safely while learning. Use placement, simulation or work examples, and be explicit about what you did independently and what you did with a preceptor.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Connect your training, a specific strength and what you want from this unit.
Sample answerI recently finished my nursing program, and my medical-surgical placement helped me see how much I enjoy patient education. I'm looking for a unit where I can develop my prioritization skills with structured preceptor feedback.
2. Tell me about a time you were unsure what to do.
Describe how you recognized the gap and used supervision.
Sample answerOn placement I was asked to help with equipment I hadn't used before. I told my preceptor I hadn't been checked off, asked to observe and practiced afterward under supervision.
3. How do you respond when priorities change?
Explain how you clarify urgency and communicate what must wait.
Sample answerDuring placement two requests came in during handoff. I confirmed what needed attention first with my preceptor, asked a teammate to relay an update and made sure the deferred request stayed on our list.
4. What would you do if you noticed a possible error?
Show that you'd speak up promptly and follow the unit's process.
Sample answerI'd raise the concern immediately with the supervising nurse, describe exactly what I'd noticed and ask for clarification before proceeding. I would follow the unit's reporting process with my supervisor.
5. Tell me about a difficult handoff from your placement.
Separate your work from your preceptor's. Mention how you checked the incoming nurse understood who would handle a pending task.
Sample answerMy preceptor and I had an unresolved request at shift change. I led with what was pending and why it mattered, then confirmed with the incoming nurse who would follow up. My preceptor helped me trim details that could wait.
6. What skill are you still developing?
Name a specific skill and explain how you'll get feedback during orientation.
Sample answerI'm working on making my updates shorter when the unit is busy. I practice leading with the concern and the decision I need. During orientation I'd ask my preceptor to flag when I provide too much detail or leave out context.
7. Why this unit as your first RN role?
Use one detail from the posting and connect it to something you learned on placement.
Sample answerI noticed your unit includes patient education in its orientation goals. On placement I enjoyed seeing how a clearer explanation could help someone prepare for discharge. I'd like feedback on that skill while I build experience managing an assignment.
